Noelene works with inspired women who have a positive mindset and who know instinctively that childbirth can be easy and comfortable and not at all like the media and society portray it to be.  If this sounds like you, what are you waiting for?  Contact me so that we can make a start now.

The perfect time to start Hypnobirthing education is before 30 weeks gestation, although anytime is possible.  If baby decides to birth a little early, you can then be sure that your program is completed and you have all the knowledge that you need for your perfect birthing experience and allowing enough time to practice the techniques.

Hypnobirthing involves learning four basic techniques.  These are breathing, relaxation, visualisation and deepening.

Childbirth is a normal, natural and healthy function of women.  Women’s bodies are made to birth babies.  Just like the bodies of our sister creatures in nature, the bodies of healthy pregnant women know instinctively how to birth.  Birth can be accomplished in a gentle and calm manner for the vast majority of women who have a low risk pregnancy.  When your mind is free of stress and fear, nature is free to process birth in the same way that it does for all our other normal physiological functions.

The Fear/Tension/Pain Syndrome was founded by Dr. Grantley Dick-Read, an early twentieth century English obstetrician.  Fear is the cause of tension within the body, and in particular in the uterus, and that tension inhibits the natural birthing process, prolonging labour and causing pain.

Eliminating fear is the first step in Hypnobirthing.  The fear emotion is responsible for much of the pain and the alteration of the physiological mechanisms of childbirth.  Fear in fact, may also be responsible for many unpredictable complications seen in childbirth.   Fear releases catecholamines, which are constrictor hormones as part of the fight/flight response in the body as described by Walter Cannon from the Harvard Medical School in the 1920’s.

As part of the fight/flight response, hormones are released to cause stored sugar and fats to enter the bloodstream, in order to provide a ready source of energy to either stay and fight the threat or flee.  Physical symptoms include increased breathing which provides extra oxygen for the muscles.  Increased heart rate and blood pressure ensuring enough blood for the brain, muscles and other key organs.  Blood leaves the hands, feet and skin surface concentrating in the head and trunk so that any limb which may be cut (as in stay and fight)  would not bleed excessively.

Red blood cells enter the bloodstream in increased numbers, carrying more oxygen to the brain and muscles.  Perspiration increases in anticipation of the body heating up due to exertion.  In a physically threatening situation, these responses are useful in that they can help us to deal with emergencies in the most effective way.

So if we are confronted with a threat to our safety (which is why our body produces the fight/flight response), these bodily reactions mobilise our resources so that we can quickly and efficiently deal with the situation.

Fear can prolong labour and pain will be present as the uterus pulls open tight muscles (ouch), often leading to fetal distress as the oxygen supply to the baby is reduced.

Fear induces restriction of the circulation of the blood flow through the uterus, which in  turn can lead to ischaemia (death of tissue) from an obstructed blood flow.

A woman’s body is perfectly equipped to decrease the discomfort of birth.  In the absence of fear and tension, the body releases a natural relaxant that facilitates easy birth.  Endorphins are our body’s natural analgesic.

When labouring women are not limited by fear and are in a state of calm, the body fills with its own natural relaxant.  Endorphins have an effect 200 times greater than morphine, producing a tranquil amnesiac effect.  This amnesic condition occurs naturally in birth in all mammals (and humans are mammals), as the labouring mother nears the end of the first stage of labour.

Every woman has within her the power to call upon her natural maternal instinct to birth her babies in joy and comfort which most mirrors nature. I invite you to come on a journey with me, and experience an amazing birth with the HypnoBirthing Australia program.

You’re an amazing woman, and there is nothing in this world that you cannot achieve if you put your mind to it.
